Well... It's been pretty crazy here the last few days. There's some good news that can only be told by the brilliant hand of hurf the long haired wonder...
So without further ado... here's the lovable hurf.
Howdy Y'All... this is hurf checking in with all of you for the first time... so be easy on me. Where to begin? I guess the beginning is a good place, ey? Here's a little story about a hopeful musician...let's just call him "mark" for now. It was about a week and a half ago and I was sitting around my house in Santa Cruz, CA with my roommate, B, and good fiend JRock. It was at that very moment that we had an idea of epic proportions. The idea, fly this mark character to California to make yet another west coast appearance. In a matter of moments this idea became action and with a little help from our friends at Orbitz.com he was on his way making the 3000 mile journey across the country. I don't want to lose any of you so I'm going to have to take you all on a trip through space and time to recap some vital details mark has already shared with you. It was the cd release of Chutes Too Narrow by the Shins (in New Jersey) and mark had given James Mercer a copy of some of his demos to check out. Wouldn't you know their tour just happened to be in San Fransisco, a mere hour+ from my house. So now with mark and the Shins on the left coast, the real news begins. This is the story of a sort of failure turned success. Tickets were sold out all three nights but we went anyway. Unable to get in because of ridiculous scalper prices, our spirits were low. It was at this moment that a suggestion was made, get a guitar and put mark to work on the streets in hopes of a positive outcome. So that's what we did. Wouldn't you know that as we were about to pack it in and give up a taxi pulled up to the Fillmore and low and behold the Shins stepped onto the street. Mark immediately went to speak with James and this is when the evening took a most positive turn. He tried to get us in on the guest list but there were no spots on that either. All was not lost though because what he shared with us next has put a permanent smile on my face. James Mercer informed us that he had sat down with the president of Sub Pop Records and listened to mark's demo. The reaction, and I quote, "It's beautiful stuff man, and we both really liked it." Numbers were exchanged and we went our separate ways. We hit a record store while B took care of some business, and then headed back to SC. I will never forget the vibe in the car that night on the way home.
To Be Continued...
